AVI is a video format Microsoft introduced in 1992. Old camcorders, digital cameras and downloaded videos often use it, with MP3, AC3 or PCM audio inside. Extracting the audio gives you a file that plays anywhere.
What is MP3?
MP3 is the most widely supported audio format in the world. It uses lossy compression to make files roughly a tenth the size of uncompressed audio. At 192 kbps or higher most listeners cannot tell it apart from the original.
