How it works

How to convert CR2 to JPG

  1. Add your photos

Drop CR2 files into the box above, or press Choose files. You can add as many as you like.

  2. Wait while they develop

Each RAW photo is developed on your device with the white balance your camera recorded. This takes a few seconds per photo, a little longer on phones.

  3. Download

Save each file on its own, or download everything at once as a ZIP file.

Why

Why convert CR2 to JPG?

CR2 files from Canon EOS cameras open in Lightroom or Canon software, but not on most phones, websites and Windows PCs. A JPG opens everywhere and is a fraction of the size, which makes it easy to share, upload or print.

About the formats

What is CR2?

CR2 is the RAW format Canon EOS cameras used from 2004 until about 2018, when it was replaced by CR3. It is based on the TIFF structure and stores 12 or 14 bit sensor data together with a full size JPG preview, so files are usually 20 to 40 MB.

What is JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) has been the standard format for photos since 1992. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding detail the eye barely notices. It cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become a solid color.

Questions

Questions and answers

Is it safe to convert my files here?

Yes. ConvertOrino converts your files with code that runs in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nobody else can see your files, and they are gone as soon as you close the page.

Which Canon cameras save CR2 files?

Canon EOS cameras made from 2004 until about 2018, such as the 5D Mark IV, 6D Mark II, 7D Mark II, 80D, 800D and 2000D. Newer Canon cameras, including the EOS R series, save CR3 instead.

Why is the JPG much smaller than the CR2?

A CR2 keeps the full 14 bit sensor data and a preview image, usually 25 MB or more. The JPG stores the finished picture with efficient compression, so it is often 5 to 10 times smaller.

Will the JPG look like the photo on my camera screen?

Very close, but not always identical. The camera screen shows a JPG made with the camera's own picture style. ConvertOrino develops the sensor data with LibRaw, using the white balance the camera recorded, so contrast and colors can differ slightly.

Why does each photo take a few seconds?

A RAW file holds unprocessed sensor data. Turning it into a picture means working out the full color of every pixel, applying white balance and converting the colors, and your own device does all of that. A 24 megapixel photo usually takes a few seconds on a computer and longer on a phone.

Can I adjust exposure or white balance?

Not here. This tool develops photos the way the camera recorded them, which is what most people need for sharing. For detailed editing use a raw editor such as Lightroom, Capture One, darktable or RawTherapee.

Is the CR2 to JPG tool free?

Yes, completely free. There is no sign up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, because your own device does the work. Very large files are limited by the memory of your device. Phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, computers handle much more.

Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows?

Yes. It works in any modern browser, including Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing needs to be installed.

Is hidden metadata such as location removed?

Yes, by default. Location, camera details and other EXIF data are removed from every converted image. For JPG output you can untick Remove metadata to keep the date taken and camera details instead.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, the conversion works without an internet connection, which also proves that your files are not sent anywhere.
