What is Opus?
Opus is an open audio codec from 2012, designed for both speech and music at low bitrates. WhatsApp voice messages, Discord, Telegram and many web calls use it. It sounds better than MP3 at the same size, but plenty of players, editors and upload forms still do not accept .opus files.
What is MP3?
MP3 is the most widely supported audio format in the world. It uses lossy compression to make files roughly a tenth the size of uncompressed audio. At 192 kbps or higher most listeners cannot tell it apart from the original.
