Formats

About the formats

What is JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) has been the standard format for photos since 1992. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding detail the eye barely notices. It cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become a solid color.

What is WebP?

WebP is an image format introduced by Google in 2010 for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. According to Google, lossy WebP files are typically 25 to 34 percent smaller than comparable JPG files.

Questions

Questions and answers

Is it safe to convert my files here?

Yes. ConvertOrino converts your files with code that runs in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nobody else can see your files, and they are gone as soon as you close the page.

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (version 14 and newer) all display WebP images. Some older desktop editors and email clients still do not.

Is the JPG to WebP tool free?

Yes, completely free. There is no sign up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, because your own device does the work. Very large files are limited by the memory of your device. Phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, computers handle much more.

Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows?

Yes. It works in any modern browser, including Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing needs to be installed.

Is hidden metadata such as location removed?

Yes, by default. Location, camera details and other EXIF data are removed from every converted image. For JPG output you can untick Remove metadata to keep the date taken and camera details instead.

Why did WebP conversion fail in my browser?

Creating WebP needs browser support. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can do it. If your browser cannot, open the page in one of those.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, the conversion works without an internet connection, which also proves that your files are not sent anywhere.
